FB Performance Transmissions Introduces Innovative Variable Stall Control Transmission Technology
After months of research, development and testing by some of the nations top drag racers, FB Performance Transmissions is releasing its Variable Stall Control "VSC" race transmission system. Variable Stall Control is a major breakthrough for racers using automatic transmissions. This major innovation ranks in significance with the first high-stall torque converter, the full manual valve body and more recently the trans-brake. Designed to increase a torque converter¹s stall speed by up to 1000rpm and maximize coupling efficiency from start to finish, VSC gives a tight converter the ability to stall to peak engine torque during launch.
The results are dramatic especially for turbo cars that require high stall speed to develop boost. National record holding import racer, Vinny Ten saw ETs drop in his Supra from 8.70s to 8.10s with an increase of 10-plus miles per hour. Data log readouts from Mustang racers Wild Bill Devine and Jimmy Larocca show major improvements in torque converter coupling efficiency. VSC not only increases stall speed but actually decreases heat generated by slippage, significantly increasing torque converter and transmission durability. Normally aspirated cars and nitrous cars also benefit from the ability to adjust stall speed for varying track conditions and engine combinations without having to change the torque converter.
FB¹s Variable Stall Control is an auxiliary valve body added to a modified full-manual trans-brake valve body. This US Patent Pending apparatus operates by momentarily shutting off fluid flow to the torque converter and simultaneously reducing existing fluid pressure. Since there is less fluid and pressure in the converter, the impeller is able to rotate faster with the same amount of engine torque providing more slippage and higher stall speed. When the VSC is electrically deactivated, fluid rapidly recharges the converter for incredible car launch and acceleration.
Because VSC significantly changes the preset operating characteristics of a torque converter, FB Performance has worked closely with Pro-Torque Custom Torque Converters to develop converters that will maximize the VSC functions for individual race applications. Pro-Torque¹s Joe Rivera explains "With VSC we are able to offer high performance converters with high coupling efficiencies approaching 97-percent, even for engines producing upwards of 1000 ft./lbs. of torque. Before VSC, the best we could achieve for extreme applications was 85 to 89-percent efficiency. Torque converter durability and transmission operation was being compromised." This collaboration between FB Performance and Pro-Torque has resulted in a VSC transmission/torque converter combination that has proven itself in the heat of battle.
