C-5 CORVETTE TORQUE CONVERTER INSTALLATION
Before starting your project it is important to have a clean area to work from in order to get the job done right.
Step1: Disconnect the battery and take wheel lock out of car, if it is equipped with one.
Step2: Locate the four frame and contact locations under rocker panels of vehicle (known as shipping slots). These will be known as your jack-stand locations.
Step3: Raise vehicle and secure with jacks, jacking the car from the front first and then the rear. CAUTION: USE EXTREME CARE WHEN JACKING FROM THE FRONT OR THE REAR OF VEHICLE! BE CERTAIN THE JACK CONTRACTS THE TWO REINFORMCENT RIBS AT THE SAME TIME.
Step 4: Shift the transmission into neutral. Remove the rear
tires and set them aside. Remove intermediate pipe from the
exhaust and tie up muffler to undercarriage of the vehicle.
Using a small pry bar, remove rubber inspection covers off
the front and rear bell housing, Using a small pry bar turn
the engine over in front of bell housing to make the converter
bolts acc4essible in rear bell housing Remove all three.
Step 5: Remove the bottom rear bell housing bolt and place
jack under the front half of the rear bell housing. This jack
will be used to raise and lower the drive-train. CAUTION:
LOWERING THE DRIVE-TRAIN TO FAR CAN RESULT IN THE BACK OF
THE ENGINE CRACKING THE FIREWALL OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT.
WHEN LOWERING HAVE SOMEONE WATCH THE ENGINE-TO-FIREWALL CLEARANCE.
Step 6: REMOVAL OF REAR SUSPENSION
- Unbolt bottom of shocks and back off both outer spring bolts to unload spring tension
- Unbolt lower ball joint, outer tie rod ends; unclip break lines and ABS wires
from suspension cradle.
- Remove transmission mount bolts.
- Locate the four main cradle studs
- Remove 21mm nuts.
- Lower cradle and set aside.
- Use small pry bar between the axle and the rear end housing. Pry gently and
tap axle end on the side with a hammer to remove. Tie
axles up and out of the way.
- At this time mufflers can be easily removed.
Step 7: REMOVAL OF TRANS ASSEMBLY
- Lower unit carefully, remembering firewall
- Disconnect VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)
- Unclip wire harness from transmission
- Remove connector to transmission
- Remove cooling lines
- Unplug MLPS (Manual Lever Positioning Switch)
- Place trans jack under trans and remove remaining bell housing bolts and carefully
lower unit.
Step 8: remove converter and install new converter until converter touches pump.
Step 9: Installation Reverse Procedure
- Fill new converter before installation
- Beware of sharp bell housing edges
Step 10: Checking fluid with Vehicle Level
- Remove plug from driver's side of transmission pan and add until fluid comes out. Plug off the hole and run vehicle to operating temperature. Recheck the fluid level. Recheck the complete installation and lower your vehicle.
